Plot Summary: Colonel Chabert (Depardieu), an officer of Napolean, died in the Battle of Eylau in 1807, leaving his poor widow to fend for herself. And fend she does, remarrying her way up the social ladder and expanding Chabert's considerable fortune. When a man who claims to be Chabert returns ten years later, demanding his worldly goods and marital rights, lines are drawn in the sand. This is an intimate and high-stakes war between Chabert's widow (Ardant), Chabert, and a very cagey lawyer (Luchini).
